BARKA

Barka - 75 min. - 11 performers - All ages
All in the same boat — explorers, migrants, or survivors, it doesn’t matter. We cast off and the journey begins, each one chasing their dream upon the waves. A storm looms on the horizon, but despite the warnings of “The Fool,” the crew pushes forward, ever faster, stronger, and bolder into the unknown.
Carried by 11 performers from diverse backgrounds (USA, France, Colombia, India, Canada, Québec…), BARKA highlights the uniqueness of each character through their movements, culture, and aspirations. The music from GKO’s album Velkombak, nominated for both the JUNO Awards and ADISQ in 2021, accompanies the show and serves as its backdrop.
Throughout the performance, the audience tastes Latin America, and especially Cumbia, which provides the rhythmic foundation, supports the multiplicity of melodies, and shapes the soundscape. Cumbia is a style of music originating in Colombia, using drums, flutes, maracas, and accordions. It intertwines with the sounds of Eastern Europe (Bulgaria, Macedonia, Serbia, Romania…), creating BARKA’s distinctive musical signature.
Cumbia is also a choreographic language, inspiring the collective movement of the artists on stage. Born from the cultural blending of Africa (through the enslaved peoples), Europe (Spanish colonization), and Colombia’s Indigenous peoples, it comes alive through skirts and drums, brass and maracas, infusing the work with a festive, irresistibly danceable spirit.
BARKA - CONCERT VERSION

Barka - 75 min. - 11 performers - All ages
In its outdoor version, Barka retains its festive chaos where circus, dance, and music intertwine, but without aerial acts. Afro-Colombian percussion and Balkan melodies drive a technically lighter show that remains vibrant and unifying. An open-air celebration where energy, rhythm, and camaraderie make the audience pulse with excitement.
